Amsterdam School Oak Coffee Table, The Netherlands 1930s (sold)

‎With its expressive and rich forms, the Amsterdam School (1910-1930) was a unique design movement in the Netherlands. It not only consisted of architecture, but also included designs for furniture. The style saw a re-emergence in popularity in the 21st century, and through this coffee table, it is easy to see why.

The Amsterdam School was an exuberant style of architecture and design that was unique to The Netherlands. The movement is regarded as the highly original Dutch correlative to the lively international Art Deco movement after which it emerged. The style is characterized by exceptionally high level craftsmanship that plays with forms freely as shown by this table. The solid oak frame has a classic look with a circular top and straight legs secured by cross stretchers. This is both a material and visual base for the decorative elements that give the design its zest. Serrations and sculpted details inspired by organic forms define the look, from the dark wood squares running vertically on the legs to the dark lacquered sphere feet and the joinery that all stand out on the smooth, simple lines of the body. Since the solid wood legs stand on the sculptural spherical feet, the cross stretchers are highlighted and the table appears light. The decorative elements are apparent yet not over the top, which is also where the appeal of the Amsterdam School lies. As a result, this coffee table can accompany any seating or stand on its own as an accent piece.

The Amsterdam School was at the height of its popularity in the 1920s, but after World War II, the style was overshadowed by the constructivism of De Stijl and the functionalism of the Bauhaus. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the Amsterdam School saw a resurgence of interest and in the 21st century that interest is once again renewed in the delightfully unique furniture pieces from the era.
