Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through beautiful shades, natural materials, and restrained forms.
Jakobsson designed this pair of wall lamps in the mid-20th century. It was a revolutionary period in design throughout Scandinavia, where function and form merged in the most intriguing ways. The designer prized the marriage of form and function, with a poise that is hard to imitate or force. The shape and materials of the shades set the overall aesthetic of these lamps. The opaque glass is made into a bulbous form with a that narrows towards the bottom, held securely by the brass shade holders. The holders feel airy, slender, and minimal, allowing the focus to be on the shades and the light they emit. The brass construction also creates a rich, warm glow, enhancing the light while exuding a sense of effortless sophistication. The mid-20th century was defined by leading Swedish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist creations, and Jakobsson’s prowess is evident here as these lamps can both stand out or blend into a room, depending on the interior style.
Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixture that can easily elevate their surroundings. These fixtures never go out of style and have been in use for centuries for good reason. This model is reflective of a time when creativity knew no bounds, and designers were free to explore new horizons in crafting captivating lighting fixtures.

With pieces inspired by nature and the tranquility of everyday life, Ilmari Tapiovaara was able to showcase designs that captured the essence of Finnish identity. In a region where darkness dominates much of the year, lighting offers more than illumination - it evokes warmth, optimism and emotional connection. In the case of this pair of sculptural table lamps made of painted metal layers, the comforting resemblance to the beloved character of “Maija Mehiläinen” brings a sense of joy and familiarity into Nordic homes.
Recalling the lovable German children’s book character published in 1912, “Maija Mehiläinen” - meaning Maya the Bee - this model carries undeniable charisma, with Maya’s stripes recognisable in the lamp’s structure. The shades are made up of a tall cylindrical forms of slender metal layered discs, each layer delicately floating above the next, emitting a soft and diffused glow. Resembling the abdomen part of a honeybee, it stands on three elegant brass legs, running up through the fourteen slates, and finally poking out from the top, bearing a resemblance to delicate bee-like antennae. While having the appearance of the insect itself, the design also gives the impression of a beehive - especially when they are switched on and the warm light seeps out in between the gaps of the layers, like drizzling honey from the cracks of honeycomb walls.
This lighting model stands out in the most wholesome and comforting way, capable of evoking dear childhood memories as well as keeping spirits up during the long winter months for those longing for the lightness of spring, full of flowers and life.

This Swedish floor lamp is a fine example of the functional yet elegant lighting produced during the mid-20th century. Scandinavian lighting designers of the period often focused on creating versatile lighting solutions for the home, incorporating adjustable elements without sacrificing visual balance. Rather than relying on ornament, these designs emphasised quality materials and practical features that allowed a single fixture to serve multiple purposes.
The lamp is built around three slender brass stems that rise from a compact conical base before gently branching outward. Each arm terminates in an individually adjustable brass neck, allowing the fabric shades to be directed independently for reading, accent, or ambient lighting. The three shades can be arranged at different angles, creating a dynamic composition while distributing light evenly throughout a room. A small metal element unites the stems, reinforcing the structure without interrupting its delicate silhouette. The contrast between the warm brass, dark lacquered base, and textured fabric shades gives the lamp visual richness while remaining understated. Despite accommodating three separate light sources, the design feels remarkably light thanks to the fine proportions of the stems and the restrained detailing throughout. As a result, this three-arm floor lamp can provide both ambient and directional light while integrating flawlessly in an interior.
Scandinavian lighting is appreciated for combining practicality with refined design. This example captures those qualities particularly well, offering adjustable illumination within a composition that remains balanced and unmistakably mid-century.

French mid-century seating frequently combined elements of regional craftsmanship with the cleaner lines associated with modernist furniture. These chairs are exemplary of the main ideals of mid-century modernism, characterised by clean, simple lines, honest use of materials, and a lack of unnecessary decorative embellishments. Instead, the focus is on craftsmanship and clever design.
The pair, crafted in the manner of Jacques Lardin, is confident yet discreet, with clean junctions and honest detailing of the joinery. Chairs are often considered especially revealing of a designer's skill because of the strict limits placed on their form by the demands of the human body. With these armchairs, the designer arrived at a clearly-structured solution in which a high degree of coherence is maintained while the chairs appear visually light and open. The warm tone of the wood highlights the natural grain, adding visual depth and character to the clean, architectural structure. Upholstered in off-white fabric, the chairs gain their quiet luxury through material rather than embellishment. Together, the wood and fabric establish a dialogue between texture and form: one smooth, one tactile, both grounded in natural beauty. They function effortlessly as statement pieces while remaining practical for everyday use. Timeless in form and character, the pair offers an expression of 1940s craftsmanship that fits with ease into both modern and classic interiors.
Though many mid-century French designers may not have the same name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The appreciation for their contribution is still growing today making outstanding pieces like these chairs highly sought after.

This pair of upholstered armchairs beautifully exemplifies the balance of tradition and forward-thinking design that characterised the first half of the 20th century. Unlike designs from outside the continent, European pieces weren’t flashy but rather well-made to fit a warm, comfortable and welcoming interior.
The chair model is defined by a clear, well-proportioned silhouette and upholstered bodies. The design expertly combines a geometric impression and high quality materials to create a balance that defines the overall form. The wooden curved armrests frame the seats, creating a grounded and sturdy presence. These exposed wooden frames feature a continuous linear structure around the chairs, bending outward into broad armrests before descending directly into the sled-style bases. That uninterrupted curve gives the silhouette a strong architectural quality. The bodies are upholstered in a striped fabric, the pattern introduces rhythm and subtle contour without overpowering the shape. The vertical stripes emphasise the chairs’ height and give structure to its soft silhouette, while the fabric’s texture adds depth and tactility.
This armchair model is a strong example of how 1930s design prioritised comfort while embracing modern restraint. The understated elegance allows the pair to blend easily into both classic and contemporary interiors, whether used as a bedroom accent, or part of a larger seating arrangement. Timeless in form and honest in construction, the pair offers both visual clarity and lasting comfort, making it versatile with an enduring appeal.
