In the case of this pair of sculptural table lamps made of painted metal layers, the comforting resemblance to the beloved character of “Maija Mehiläinen” brings a sense of joy and familiarity into Nordic homes.

Recalling the lovable German children’s book character published in 1912, “Maija Mehiläinen” - meaning Maya the Bee - this model carries undeniable charisma, with Maya’s stripes recognisable in the lamp’s structure. The shades are made up of a tall cylindrical forms of slender metal layered discs, each layer delicately floating above the next, emitting a soft and diffused glow. Resembling the abdomen part of a honeybee, it stands on three elegant brass legs, running up through the fourteen slates, and finally poking out from the top, bearing a resemblance to delicate bee-like antennae. While having the appearance of the insect itself, the design also gives the impression of a beehive - especially when they are switched on and the warm light seeps out in between the gaps of the layers, like drizzling honey from the cracks of honeycomb walls.

They were known for their innovative use of natural, sustainable materials, including rope, wicker, and bamboo. The duo’s work was heavily influenced by the Modernist movement, which sought to create functional and streamlined designs that were accessible to a wider audience.

Audoux & Minet’s pieces are characterised by a strong sense of craftsmanship, with each piece being handmade by the designers themselves or by skilled artisans. This dining table showcases a long rectangular top finished in warm wood veneer, its broad uninterrupted surface displays the grain. The top sits above thick base covered in a tightly woven natural fibre that introduces an immediate depth of tone and texture. The fibre flows across the supports in beautiful braided patterns, emphasising the bold and solid look. Across their faces, the rope is made into a geometric pattern which breaks up the woven surface to create a beautiful rhythm within the structure. Founded by Philipp Rosenthal in Selb, Germany, in 1879, Rosenthal began as a porcelain painting business before establishing its own porcelain factory in 1891. From an early stage, the company combined porcelain manufacturing with an interest in contemporary design. Fast forward to 1950, Philip Rosenthal Jr. joined the company and became closely involved with product design, eventually playing a decisive role in its development. He created Rosenthal studio-line, giving a distinct identity to the company’s more design-focused production and its collaborations with contemporary artists, designers and architects.

This 1970s ceramic table lamp belongs to that later period, when Rosenthal’s long tradition of ceramic manufacturing was increasingly connected with international modern design. The ceramic base has a bold bottle-shaped profile, with a broad cylindrical lower body flowing into a narrow neck. Shallow vertical ridges run around the body, subtly breaking up the curved surface and creating highlights and shadows. The glaze is rich, combining rusty browns and amber tones across the surface. A broad cylindrical fabric shade sits at the top, its generous width echoing the bold and plump ceramic beneath it. When illuminated, the warm textile filters the light softly and brings out the deep colour of the glossy glaze, allowing the ceramic surface to become animated.

The lamp has a strong presence without requiring an elaborate form, while the subtle details give the ceramic enough character to remain interesting.
