Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through beautiful shades, natural materials, and restrained forms.
Jakobsson designed this pair of wall lamps in the mid-20th century. It was a revolutionary period in design throughout Scandinavia, where function and form merged in the most intriguing ways. The designer prized the marriage of form and function, with a poise that is hard to imitate or force. The shape and materials of the shades set the overall aesthetic of these lamps. The opaque glass is made into a bulbous form with a that narrows towards the bottom, held securely by the brass shade holders. The holders feel airy, slender, and minimal, allowing the focus to be on the shades and the light they emit. The brass construction also creates a rich, warm glow, enhancing the light while exuding a sense of effortless sophistication. This “2004” pendant lamp, designed by Paavo Tynell for Taito in the 1930s, is a quintessential example of early Finnish modern lighting. Known as “the man who illuminated Finland,” Tynell was a pioneer in bringing elegance, lightness, and innovation to everyday interiors. His designs for Taito helped establish Finnish lighting as a global benchmark, blending functionality with a poetic sensibility that made lamps more than utilitarian objects, but integral elements of atmosphere and style.
This model features a softly stepped opaline glass shade that diffuses light evenly, producing a warm and atmospheric glow. The shade’s gentle form showcases Tynell’s gift for balancing simplicity with refinement, ensuring that the piece remains modest in profile while quietly sophisticated in detail. Suspended from a slender nickel-plated rod attached to a polished canopy, the lamp demonstrates Tynell’s sensitivity to proportion and harmony, qualities that made his designs adaptable to a wide range of interiors. The use of opaline glass was not only functional, providing glare-free illumination ideal for dining or working spaces, but also aesthetic, introducing a soft tone that completes the sheen of the metal fittings. Model “2004” was manufactured at Taito. In 1918 Tynell founded Oy Taito AB, which eventually became the Finnish lighting industry trendsetter during the interwar period. This rare model from the 1930s can easily draw all the attention while not compromising on quality and functionality.

Among the collection of talented individuals who have worked for Artifort, Theo Ruth was the acclaimed Dutch furniture manufacturer’s first permanent designer. Ruth’s work significantly advanced Artifort’s laudable reputation, specifically through his designs of chairs. His most famous chair is the 1952 “Congo” model that enjoyed great success.
This pair of “Congo” chairs is representative of Ruth’s craftsmanship and talent. The model is full of exceptional features and details that make it a unique example of the creative overflow that defined mid-century modernism in The Netherlands and Europe. The flowing structure displays beautifully curved lines and rounded edges, ensuring extreme comfort and emphasizing its ergonomic design. The distinct look is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials. The wooden legs’ smooth lines stand out against the textural shearling, while also accentuating the unique look of the upholstery. The soft fibres of the lightweight, feathery shearling drape beautifully over the lounge chairs, while the darker brown colour of the wood adds depth. Mid-century European designers and cabinetmakers were very firm about two things regarding seating designs: the sitting experience must be comfortable and that the model had to look good from every single angle. The ‘Congo’ model fulfills these principles with its arm-less body and interesting, curved legs. As with most lounge chairs, this model is also built in a permanently reclined position, another lovely feature.
Today, Theo Ruth's furniture designs are considered to be important examples of mid-century modern design, and his work continues to be highly valued by collectors and design enthusiasts around the world.

The chair model is defined by a clear, well-proportioned silhouette and upholstered bodies. The design expertly combines a geometric impression and high quality materials to create a balance that defines the overall form. The wooden curved armrests frame the seats, creating a grounded and sturdy presence. These exposed wooden frames feature a continuous linear structure around the chairs, bending outward into broad armrests before descending directly into the sled-style bases. That uninterrupted curve gives the silhouette a strong architectural quality. The bodies are upholstered in a striped fabric, the pattern introduces rhythm and subtle contour without overpowering the shape. The vertical stripes emphasise the chairs’ height and give structure to its soft silhouette, while the fabric’s texture adds depth and tactility.
