Danish Cabinetmaker Walnut Chair and Stool in Sheepskin, Denmark 1940s (sold)

Danish Cabinetmaker Walnut Chair and Stool in Sheepskin, Denmark 1940s (sold)
In much of Europe, the 1940s were - design-wise - still influenced by the aesthetics of the previous decades and mixed earlier influences with the technical and visual innovations of mid-century modernism. In consequence, this set has the best visual qualities of both eras, with traditional materials, craftsmanship, and a modern, architectural look.
Visually, the pieces of this set have an essentially simple structure that assumes some knowledge of architecture on the designer’s part. This wouldn’t be unusual, as most Danish mid-century designers were also trained architects. Using simple but well-though out lines, this chair was designed to be minimalistic, yet aesthetically distinct. The outlines get wider and thinner in different shapes and forms, bringing it into a dynamic balance. The curving backrest supported by the neck is the most attention grabbing feature, complemented by the round seat and round legs. The stool mimics the shape of the seat and legs perfectly, connecting the two pieces visually. The seats’ and the chair’s backrest both have the ergonomic design mid-century modernism is renowned for, enhanced by the lush sheepskin upholstery. The solid walnut structures stand out against the light fabric, creating even more visual interest. While the set is an aesthetic unit, there are still individual details that make each one interesting on its own. Such a detail is the pair of dark screws on the chair’s back that adds to the elegant, yet raw organicity.
With the major rise in popularity that mid-century modern experienced, it’s easy to see touches of the style in contemporary homes. The natural and unfading beauty of wood, and the simple, but stylish design is timeless of the era. With an outstanding balance of straight and curved lines, quality materials, such as the solid walnut and sheepskin, and the mastery of the Danish cabinetmaker, this set is sure to provide comfort and style to any interior.

Swedish furniture design is a modernist story of enduring style. With its elegant shell shape, this lounge chair embodies the timeless appeal of Swedish furniture that was set in the past, by a cluster of iconic designers, but which continues to progress and fascinate.
The stylish design of this unique Arne Dahlén chair combines the pared-down Swedish elegance and modern aesthetics. The design is full of modern energy that has, and surely will continue to endure for generations thanks to its classic look, quality materials and evident craftsmanship. Chairs are often considered especially revealing of a designer's skill because of the strict limits placed on their design by the demands of the human body. With this “Eva” model, the designer arrived at a clearly-structured solution in which a high degree of coherence is maintained while the chair appears visually light and open. The structure is made entirely of solid wood with sculpted and tapered legs that are splayed gently, giving stability to the shell body. The legs end in brass caps that accentuate the shape. The elegant simplicity and honesty of the frame is further enhanced by the premium wool blend upholstery which complements the both the cosy shape and solid wood legs gracefully. The streamlined shape and soft fabric create not only a modern and elegant look, but also great comfort, preserving the Swedish ideal of “good design” that holds functionality just as high as aesthetics.
There is something universally appealing about Swedish furniture. Favouring the elegant lines of Swedish classicism of the 1920s, the typical mid-century silhouette is gracefully rounded. Its simplicity is often copied, but the vibe is difficult – if not impossible – to emulate. This chair however, exudes it naturally.
