French Provincial Solid Oak Bench, France 1920s (sold)

The “Années folles” or the "crazy years" was the decade of the 1920s in France. It was coined to describe the rich social, artistic, and cultural collaborations of the period. This bench is the visual antithesis of the roaring twenties with an understated, rustic look, created for a primarily functional purpose.

The aesthetic of this piece is very strong thanks to its heavy, solid oak body. The wood’s texture and grain are characteristic and diverse, dictating the visual impression. French provincial style or more commonly referred to as French country style is distinguishable in its design due to the earthy hues and functionality as well as sophistication. The seat is mounted on pedestal-like legs, which are supported by a stretcher to enhance its strength. The structure is held together by mortise and tenon joinery, often seen in 20th century woodworking. It is a sturdy technique that is sure to last. As seen on the stretcher connecting the legs, the protruding tenon, cut at the end of one piece, fits into a corresponding recess, called a mortise, in the other. This joint is a staple in the construction of this bench, and also defines is aesthetically. Furthermore, cutting a clean and tight mortise and tenon by hand is recognized as a sign of skill even among cabinetmakers.

Although inspired by Parisian furnishings, French provincial pieces, including this bench, are less elaborate and more rustic in their design, with a sturdy and strong structure designed to withstand long term use. This bench is defined by its long horizontal lines, its joinery, and its material. It can be incorporated into any space thanks to its classic look, including the living room, bedroom, hallway or even outside. Craftsmanship and quality materials are among the few things that will never go out of style, therefore this oak bench could be an addition of a lifetime to any space.
