French Upholstered Club Chairs, France 1940s (sold)

This elegant pair of club chairs is an interesting bridge between the 20th century’s earlier artistic movements, like Art Deco, and the modernist movement that was about to shape much of Europe’s, and therefore France’s furniture design for the following decades.

While the early days of mid-century modernism were still heavily influenced by the designs of the previous decades, the later part brought with it the more angular mid-century modern design that’s been still increasing in popularity. This set - recalling the work of Jacques Adnet - has the best visual qualities of both stages, with traditional materials and a modern, architectural look. The design recalls the chic Art Deco club chairs of the era. While initially the chair style was called a ‘comfortable chair’, it soon began to be known by its now famous moniker because of its popularity among clubs, letting customers sink into them with a drink. These chairs provide the same comfort thanks to their sizeable frames and removable seat cushions covered in an elegant, light fabric. The upholstery’s clearly sectioned lines outline the shape visually, adding to the artistic impression of the design. The chairs of this pair are gracefully resting on four solid wooden square feet; the strong lines and proportions of the chairs are perfectly balanced with the short feet. Like the legs, the bodies of these chairs are more squared as opposed to the predominantly rounded lines of later mid-century modern designs. This angular style is reminiscent of Art Deco and creates elegant lines with a more edgy, architectural look that is inherently stylish. Fulfilling the fundamental design principles of exceptional sitting comfort and that the models must look good from every single angle, the seats are slightly raised, and the backs tilted for outmost comfort. Quality craftsmanship was evidently of optimum importance for the maker who created these chairs. The element that further elevates these chairs is the upholstery; the light mohair fabric is exquisite and stand out against the design’s various shapes and forms.

With the major rise in popularity that mid-century modern experienced, it’s easy to see touches of mid-20th century French style in contemporary homes. The natural and unfading beauty of wood, and the simple, modern and elegant design is timeless of the era. With an outstanding combination of high quality materials and French design elements, this pair is sure to provide comfort and style in any interior.
