Scandinavian design is a way of looking at design from a minimalist perspective with a respect for functionality and beauty. This low armchair stands as evidence that Scandinavian design is best described as being fairly minimalist, with clean, simple, and organic lines. Highly functional, the style is effective without needing heavy ornamentation.

The term “Scandinavian design” originates from the 1950s, and established the meaning of it that continues to today: beautiful, simple, clean design inspired by nature, with an emphasis on enjoying the domestic environment. This armchair has a luxurious appearance thanks to the evidently high level of craftsmanship and materials. The light wood frame has flowing lines that are most apparent on the arms. The woodworking stands out the most here as well, shaping the wood into versatile curved shapes and forms. It appears as if the whole chair was built around the arms, including the upholstered body, as the fabric covers none of them. Instead, the thick seat and back cushion perfectly embraces and highlights the arms. The lower wooden structure has a similarly curved shape, especially in the front. The legs are quite short, therefore the chair sits low for a cosy, grounded effect. Keeping functionality at the design’s core, the back legs are splayed for stability while the back is gently reclined for comfort. The upholstery greatly adds to the stylish look; the texture of the bouclé fabric stands out against the smooth surface of the wood, and accentuates the generous size of the removable seat cushion as well.

The most consistently and determinedly craft-based Scandinavian industry was furniture-making. The tradition of high-quality, handmade furniture - such as this timeless armchair - became greatly respected internationally and guaranteed the longevity of its popularity.
