Eskilstuna Elektro Fabriks AB was a Swedish company that operated from 1916 to 1984, specializing in the production of electrical appliances and lighting fixtures. During the mid-century period, the company produced a range of iconic floor lamps that epitomized Swedish design of the era.

This pair is composed of “model 145” floor lamps that have the characteristically curved tubes the company’s floor lamps are known for. Essentially, the design is minimalist and sleek, featuring a small circular brass base and thin, black lacquered stems that support two large, opaque shades. Despite the minimalism, the design appears quite elaborate which is the result of the double stems and shades, and the individual curving angles supporting them. The versatile lines of the stems interact with each other, establishing the modernist aesthetic. Playing into this is the pairing of materials as well. The white fabric shades are arranged on different heights with brass sockets and adjustable necks. This allows them to be moved in any direction, keeping with the traditional Swedish value of functionality. Swedish mid-century design was heavily influenced by the principles of functionalism and simplicity.

The designers of this period sought to create objects that were both beautiful and practical, with a focus on clean lines and understated elegance. Eskilstuna Elektro Fabriks AB was at the forefront of this movement, producing lighting such as these “model 145” floor lamps that are both functional and stylish.
