Upholstered Mohair Stool by Jindřich Halabala, Czechia 1950s (sold)
Upholstered Mohair Stool by Jindřich Halabala, Czechia 1950s (sold)
This model exemplifies why Jindřich Halabala's work is considered to be a connection between innovative Czech cubism from the 1910s, Art Deco from the early 1920s and European modern art after the Second World War.
The designer’s chairs, such as this stool, carry design elements from Art Deco as well as early mid-century design, resulting in a unique and immediately recognizable aesthetic that’s based on daring shapes and forms. The combination of curved and straight lines and the absence of excess decoration is very typical of the era’s designers, who saw possibilities in the aesthetics of modernist design and materials. Halabala furniture is known for its firmness, high quality and functionality, with this stool able to be adapted to any interior.
The luxurious fabric choice further highlights the designers’ attention to detail. The upholstery is a visual treat, with an exquisite, soft fabric made of mohair. The material is attention-grabbing as it envelops the entire piece, providing both visual and physical comfort. Overall, this stool is minimal and infinitely stylish, complementing its surroundings.
Halabala's designs can be found in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Art in Olomouc and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today, Czechia issues an annual award in his name for excellence in furniture and interior design.
