Mid-Century Modern Solid Wood Mirror by Eriksmålaglas, Sweden ca 1950s (sold)

‎‎‎‎In Sweden, the efforts to improve design in the twentieth century were more purist and moralistic compared to other countries due to the socialist government structure adopted there since the 1930s. Sweden embraced both tradition and industrial design, resulting in pieces that are just as contemporary today as they were back in the day.

This mirror is from the famed mirror manufactory, Eriksmålaglas established in the homonymous Swedish locality. With an overall look and details that represent mid-century Swedish modernism, this solid wood mirror is rooted in tradition. It reflects the traditions of timelessness and quality with a sizeable frame that follows the understated yet well-though out design principles of Swedish craftsmanship with simple lines and visible tenon joinery. The rectangular frame and the beautiful wood grain provide simple elegance, making this mirror perfect to bring some understated modernism to any space. Abroad, the Swedish efforts to create applied art attuned to modern man and his needs have been termed a style, Swedish Modern. This style, as shown through this mirror, means natural, understated form and honest treatment of material. The mirror is marked by the manufacturer’s sticker and numbered ‘649-3’. It is also indicated on this mark, that the glass of the mirror is of the highest, “AA” quality.

Eriksmålaglas was well known for their continuing manufacturing of modern furniture pieces with glass designed by leading Swedish designers. Among them was Erik Höglund, who designed many of their mirror models, possibly this one as well.
