$0.00

Armchair designed by Lina Bo Bardi in Brazil, ca 1948.

Designed by Brazilian architect, designer Lina Bo Bardi for Studio d´Arte Palma in the late 1940s, this wonderful piece is truly an architects chair; It's clear and honest with the construction and joints fully out in the open. The wooden construction is made out two 90 degree angled and rounded shapes, on each side connected together with two large bolts. The wooden armrests have the same rounded shape and are attached to the side in a small notch next to the backrest. On top of the armrests are two small and narrow cushions providing more comfort. Two large rectangular cushions, upholstered in yellow fabric, are used for the seat and backrest. Brazil Studio d´Arte Palma. produced in the late 1940's - 1950's

Interestingly this unnamed chair bears quite some similarity to Pierre Jeanneret's 'scissor' chair designed in the same period, 1947 - 1949, which makes you wonder who inspired who.

Although Bardi's work has found quite some praise in the past, we're sure that with the still rising interest in Brazilian design, in the coming years it will find the collectible design spotlights even more.

About the designer:

Lina Bo Bardi, born Achilina Bo, was born in Rome in 1914. After previously having studied drawing at the Artistic Lyceum, she received her architecture degree from the University of Rome in 1940, being one of the few women of her time to study architecture. However as Europe was being engulfed in World War II, it was very difficult for Bo Bardi to start a career as an architect and thus she mostly focused on illustrating, publishing and editorial work for various publications, such as Gio Ponti’s famous Domus magazine.
