A Pair of “Fauteuils de Paquebot” Chairs, France 1950s (sold)

$0.00

These so-called “boat or cruise chairs” (fauteuils de paquebot in French) are not only visually arresting, but also interesting thanks to their historical use.

The chairs of this pair are made of exotic wood and were used as deck chairs on boats around the mid-century. As most deck chairs on cruisers, the backrests can be folded down, a feature of practicality and functionality. The stand-out feature are the curved armrests that form a line with the back and front legs, creating a beautiful, flowing line. The square backrests, seats and legs balance out the armrests’ shape. This unusual silhouette is complemented by the cane work of the manufacturer that forms the folding seats and backrests. The combination of the exotic wood and cane create an understated, luxurious look.

Thanks to the short legs and the angle of the backs, these chairs are perfect to lounge in the sun, not only on a boat, but in any setting. The wood has a beautiful patina and the chairs emanate history to such a degree that the user can almost feel it.
