This one-of-a-kind floor lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details. According to the Museum of Malmö, Einar Bäckström founded his workshop in 1918 for the manufacture of lighting and ornaments, and as the museum notes, “all patterns were composed by Mr. Bäckström himself”.

Made in Bäckström 's workshop in Malmö, this “EB 5336” lamp has an unmistakable Swedish mid-century look. From the clean lines and the brass structure to the soft edges and intuitive functionality, this model is timelessly stylish. The long brass tube serves as a vertical bridge between the heavier looking base and the lighter shade. Even as the colours go, the lamp becomes lighter, starting from the black base and ending in the white shade. The upper part is the most decorated part of the design, with a brass thread socket and swivel, and the white shade. Both are adorned with a quatrefoil pattern, a decorative element consisting of a symmetrical shape which forms the overall outline of four partially overlapping circles of the same diameter. This pattern is found in art, architecture and heraldry. This floor lamp features a moveable head; therefore, it is highly customizable. The lampshade concentrates and directs the light effectively, while the pattern lets it through to the sides as well to create a nice effect.

The lamp is grounded by the round dark “two-toed” base, which also adds a bit of weight to this otherwise airy looking lamp. The lamp is marked by the manufacturer’s sign. Very little is known about Einar Bäckström, but even with scarce information available his lighting designs speak for themselves. With restrained playfulness, Swedish design and quality, this floor lamp is perfect to bring visual interest and style into any interior.
