Scandinavian Wabi Sabi Stool, Scandinavia ca 1950s (sold)

Wabi-sabi is an ancient Japanese philosophy that can be applied within interior design, and to anyone’s lifestyle as a whole. It is the practice of appreciating and accepting the beauty in simplicity, imperfections, and age. The expression defines the core principles behind this stool’s aesthetic: simplicity, humbleness, and being in tune with nature, whilst appreciating the beauty of age and wear. It takes inspiration from nature, which is rarely perfect or symmetrical and will eventually decay.

In the absence of modern polished surfaces, this stool has textural, rough edges and surfaces, the wooden material takes pride in its qualities. The construction strips back the unnecessary, showcasing only the essential elements of it. The wood is left in its natural form as much as possible, while also prioritizing functionality and longevity. This is evident in the sculpted and splayed legs, and the joinery technique. Especially the latter and the patinated surface prove that this stool was actively used somewhere in Scandinavia in its heyday. This historic quality gives this stool charm, and much like Asian tea cups, it is not meant to be kept in a vitrine, but to be used by its owner.

Alongside the touchstones of simplicity, functionality, and comfort, Scandinavian design utilizes light, creates use of natural materials, and integrates with nature. This sort of Nordic minimalism allows people to invite peace into their home without creating a space that is uninviting or cold. Similarly, this stool is full of vitality without being chaotic or overworked.
