Six Oak and Straw Rustic Dining Chairs, The Netherlands 1950s (sold)

Six Oak and Straw Rustic Dining Chairs, The Netherlands 1950s (sold)

$0.00

This Dutch mid-century dining set of six is impressive in its simplicity. This set carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and Italian mid-century design – simple, functional – and shows the generally less known rustic side of Dutch design of the era.

The set’s aesthetic is defined by the high ladder backrest with four horizontal slats. The slats have a “hill” shape with a rounded top. This structure creates an airy and rhythmic look that is further complemented by the legs’ stretchers. The overall design of these chairs is reminiscent of the Shaker style, specifically the so-called shawl rail chair. Based upon ascetic principles, Shaker furniture is recognized by clean, smooth lines, simplicity of design, high quality and excellent joinery. The unique Dutch design element is the use of straw on the seats with expert weaving, that pairs beautifully with the oak body, and gives this set a rustic and organic look.

Each of these dining chairs was created by exceptionally skilled Dutch craftsmen who made sure these chairs are durable, sturdy and functional, while their expert craftsmanship and use of high-quality wood and straw make each piece a beautiful design heirloom.
