Hans-Agne Jakobsson "B205" Table Lamp for Markaryd, Sweden 1960s (sold)

$0.00

Inspired by the organic mushroom lamp, this model “B205” table lamp is a lovely design combining traditional and modern lighting design. The design is therefore derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility, mixed with an extensive use of perspex glass and brass as its materials.

The use of brass was widespread throughout Scandinavia during the mid-century era, and Jakobsson most memorable designs are mostly composed of the material. In this case, the base and thick shaft are purely brass, combined with a less common material, perspex glass. The use of acrylic glass was still fairly uncommon in the 1960s, showing the Swedish designer’s forward-thinking design skill. The material is a polymethyl methacrylate acrylic sheet which is manufactured from methyl methacrylate monomer, and is lower density and lighter in weight compared with glass. Additionally, the clear sheet offers excellent optical clarity which is why it is used here as well. The resulting look is similar to milk glass and contrasts beautifully against the golden hue of the brass body. The brass shaft reaches up high, over the plastic shade, which creates a neat look. The shade is composed of two different parts, the white acrylic plastic curved top and a layered lower part composed of rings gradually increasing in size to diffuse the light. The design is completed when the light is switched on, dressing the brass in a golden yellow hue, creating a cosy dimmed light that is especially atmospheric.

True to Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s design vision, this table lamp model utilizes its quality materials to create a soft quality of light. This “B205” table lamp was created at his own famed workshop in Markaryd, Sweden where the Swedish designer and cabinetmaker gave shape to most of his era defining creations.

About the designer:

Born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden, Hans Agne Jakobsson is one of the most well-known Swedish lighting designers. He did his carpenter apprenticeship before studying architecture in Gothenburg.

First working as an industrial designer for General Motors, he later founded his own company after being an assistant to the designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West. In 1950, due to Christmas, he added a model of hanging lamps in small strips of pine in one of his stores to soften the lively lighting of the shop window. The people who were passing by were immediately seduced by this hanging lamp, which started it all. He established his own company in 1951: Hans Agne Jakobsson AB and began producing this model in his factories and achieved success abroad as well. In 50 years, he designed more than 2000 lamps with unique designs.

He used materials and experimented with multiple techniques, for example using fabrics with fringes, blown glass of colour and smoked glass. His great diversity resulted in a wide range of timeless lighting models. These pieces continue to seduce design lovers, as they adapt themselves to any interior, without blending into the background.

Today, Jakobsson’s works can be found in private homes as well as public institutions throughout Sweden. The designer passed away in 2009 in Sweden, leaving behind a great legacy. ~H.
