Italian mid-20th century lighting design was infinitely captivating, featuring one-of-a-kind models crafted by renowned Italian designers such as Ettore Sottsass, Gio Ponti, Gavina and other internationally esteemed names. As these wall lamps show, their designs carried in them artistic expression, quality, and the infamous Italian style.
The allure of Italian mid-century lighting still endures, thanks to the timeless inventiveness of models such as these wall lamps. The design is individualistic, balancing the lamps on the border between art and design - if there is one at all -. With a form that recalls the Art Deco movement, these wall lamps combine a brass structure with a characteristic opal glass shade. The shades’ shape resembles that of traditional oil lamps’, with a collar and a so-called chimney. The shape is enhanced, with a more pronounced base and neck. As the light sources are placed near the base of the shades, when lit, the glass showcases its many colours with an ombre effect. Whether turned on or off, the opal shades provide great contrast to the patinated brass structures. The sleek, straight lines of the backplates and arms create interesting angles. The lines are decorated with small spheres that pop against the smooth surfaces and provide an element of whimsy. Italian mid-century designers merged culture, industry, and Italian identity, when bringing Italian lighting to the highest level of excellence. Exemplified by these lamps, they created high style avant-garde in both forms and groundbreaking technologies, making significant contribution to the story of Italian design, while bringing lighting to the highest expression of modernism.
Italian mid-century lighting has the characteristic to be able to harmonize with many styles, both historic and contemporary. When looking for artisanal beauty, there’s one country that gets it right every time. To quote Toma Clark-Haines, “Lighting is the jewellery of the room and sets the vibe of a space. When it comes to lighting, it’s got to be Italian.”
