Peill & Putzler "Water Lily" Opal Moulded Wall Light, Germany 1970s (sold)
Peill & Putzler "Water Lily" Opal Moulded Wall Light, Germany 1970s (sold)
Known as the “seerose” in German, as the “lily”, or the “artichoke”, this flush mount was made by the German glass and lighting company, Peill & Putzler in the early 1970s. The design was awarded the "IF Product Design Award" in 1975.
The many nicknames of this model have a fairly obvious inspiration, that being the opal glass umbrella in the shape of a stylized blossom. The moulded round white opal glass is the perfect material to enhance the organic look, especially when the light is lit; the satin-matte surface of the hand-blown glass glows beautifully when the light is turned on, creating an ambient mood while also highlighting the sculpted floral form by creating shadows that add a lot of depth. Additionally to its aesthetic perks, opal glass has many great qualities. It stands out for its elegance, resistance, and practicality which is why it has steadily been around since the 16th century. As a flush mount, the lamp is close to the wall, connecting to it by a metal backplate. This Peill & Putzler flush mount exists in several different forms and sizes.
Peill & Putzler was one of the founding members of the German Design Council in 1953. The company always worked with important German designers including Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Helmut Demary, Horst Tüselmann, Dieter Sieger, and Gerhard Beigel. They also produced glass for other light companies in Europe, such as Raak Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Massive from Belgium, to name a few.
