Lighting is a huge part of Scandinavian design, ranging from the warm, low light of a candle to the bright overhead glow of a ceiling light. This early 20th century ceiling lamp is a unique piece of functionalist design with the unmistakeable touches of Modernism.

Modernism, a cultural movement that started at the end of the 19th century, was a break from the Realism that dominated the art world before. Modernism was an escape from this rigidity, and in combination with the minimalist approach of Scandinavian design, a distinctive style was born, with clean simple lines and inherent elegance. Highly functional, this ceiling lamp, like the style itself, is effective without needing heavy elements. While this shape used to be quite common, this lamp offers plenty that distinguishes it aesthetically. First and foremost, the glass shade has a unique surface with indentations on its inner layer resulting in an interesting look that is only enhanced when the light is turned on. The black lacquered tin frame “cages” the glass shade with a swirling line that connects the lower ring plate and the top. The rod and canopy have an understated look and direct the eye to the body.

The patterned glass shade and tin body are used creatively to set this ceiling lamp apart. Its streamlined modernism makes it an ideal addition to any interior style and space, while the unique materials make it a beautiful accent piece.
