The Danes call it Hygge, the Swedes Lagom, and the Norwegians, Friluftsliv. When it comes to Scandinavian interiors, these expressions mean clear design that can be enjoyed without being distracted by too many details. These ideals play an essential role in lighting design to create a soothing ambience.
This ceiling lamp has a unique and clever design that is in service of functionality and the mid-century idea of “good design”. The base shape is already peculiar, with downward facing lightbulbs on six arms arranged symmetrically. The arms have a pronounced curve in an S-shape ending in sharp tips. This contrast between the shapes and forms naturally engages the eyes and creates a stylish modern aesthetic. The so-called cluster, or body where the arms meet has a diamond shape and is lacquered black with a brass tip and ring over it. The dark colour creates a focal point that is visible from all angles. When lit, the spherical opal glass bulbs brighten up the brass’s colour, and create ambient lighting. The design is very successful in mixing the traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of Scandinavian Modernism.
Surrounded by stunning natural features from fjords to evergreen forests, the Nordic nations have developed a unique, nature-loving and understated interior design style. Ceiling lamps, such as this 1950s model have an important role to create an ambience that is cosy and stylish while not compromising on quality and functionality.
