This elegant floor lamp was produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1960s. The design was created by Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandström, both of whom were brilliant Swedish designers of the era.

Swedish Modern, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter-reaction to the earlier, more decorative design movements, such as Art Deco. In comparison - as this floor lamp demonstrates - the mid-century era brought streamlined modernism to Sweden. This lamp has a classic, inherently elegant design that contemporary pieces still try to mimic. Like many of the decade’s designs, this lamp masterfully pairs materials and textures. As a result, the piece has an essentially Nordic modern look thanks to its understated and elegant design choices. The main material comprising the base and body is brass; the polished brass is the perfect material to showcase the curvature of the cone-shaped base, as well as the thin, sleek body of the stem. The texture of the lampshade’s fabric matches beautifully with the brass, and allows this ‘G-024’ model to complement any style of interior. In line with the Functionalist trend of the time, Alf Svensson & Yngvar Sandström abandoned ornamentation in favour of form for this piece. Nonetheless, the warmth and beauty inherent in Swedish design is maintained, as well as the high-quality craftsmanship expected of Swedish manufacturer Bergboms.

At its most basic level, mid-century modern designs are known for juxtaposing sleek lines with organic shapes, and using new materials and manufacturing methods to re-imagine traditional pieces. This floor lamp is a perfect example of this, with a modern look that isn’t a complete departure from the past.

Condition:

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The shade is a later replacement.
