Mid-century modern designers had a deep appreciation for materials and their inherent qualities. Wood - particularly teak, walnut, and oak - played a prominent role in furniture and architectural elements. The warmth of wood was often juxtaposed with metal accents, such as steel or brass, creating a visually striking contrast.

Early on, many of the Danish cabinetmakers’ workshops had been producing historical furniture; master cabinetmakers had been renowned for their solid wooden furniture rendered in various styles of the past. This coffee table, while not specifically historical in style, shows some restrained decorative elements that are generally rather sparse in Scandinavian mid-century furniture. The design is dominated by the round tabletop with a spectacular sunburst pattern. The sunburst design or figure was commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns; it consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central point in the manner of sunbeams. To support the top are four straight legs with impeccable joinery, visible under the tabletop. This piece also features brass capped feet, though due to the beautiful patina the colour contrast is more subtle. Since this table was made in the heyday of the mid-century, the legs, and the design as a whole, lacks heavy ornamentation and instead focuses on the natural beauty of wood and the subtle decorative elements.

This coffee table perfectly encapsulates the design ethos of the era, showcasing the beauty in simplicity and practicality through employing organic materials and unique details. Thanks in great part to an early emphasis on wood and a theoretical resistance to certain modernist currents by influential designers, mid-century modern furniture design in much of Scandinavia has avoided associations with cold industrialization and machine aesthetics.
