The well-known french duo Guillerme et Chambron, sharing a passion for design, started Votre Maison in the late 1940s alongside cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq. The name Votre Maison was inspired by their desire to create furniture that evokes a sense of home. They envisioned the home as a place where the family lives both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Votre Maison quickly became a significant player in furniture manufacture, as the duo left a lasting impression on the design landscape of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Guillerme et Chambron successfully innovated furniture for the home, producing pieces of quality and functionality with distinctive features. This armchair is an example of the duo’s excellent artistry and innovative style.
This armchair, also referred to as a “chaise bergère”, is a modern take on the traditional bergère chair, with its unique and innovative design. Bergère chairs started appearing in France in the 18th century and are characterised by the shape of their frame and upholstery, as well as known for their comfort and functionality. Although bergère chairs were mostly popular during the reign of Louis XVI, “bergère” - translating to “shepherdess” - could also allude to the calmness of the countryside. The “wings”, joined to each side of the upper backrest, had the original purpose of protecting the face from fireside heat and draughts, and to create a sense of privacy and obscure the person seated. However, for this model, this choice of design is more aesthetic than functional and instead hints at the form of its predecessor. The rest of the frame consists of an elongated backrest made of ten wooden spindles, with those at the extremities extending upwards beyond the frame. The back is slightly tilted for comfort, aided by the generous seat upholstery and back cushions. The light upholstery complements the beautiful grain of the oak, creating an elegant contrast between the wood and the light coloured cushions.
With this model, the iconic French duo effortlessly highlight how certain stylistic decisions can create harmony through forms and negative space. Through their establishment of Votre Maison, a landmark of French mid-century design history, Guillerme et Chambron significantly influenced how to blend functional and aesthetic choices.
