Arden Riddle (1921–2011) was a prolific studio craftsman who produced furniture for more than half a century. After a formal education in furniture design, Riddle opened his shop in Copley, Ohio in 1950 which he operated for more than 50 years. His craft approach was simple: furniture should be striking in quality and beauty, and always in service to their users. His creations were influenced by Danish design and the German Bauhaus movement — which merged into what is recognised today as mid-century modernism.

Riddle’s standards for design and execution were extremely high. He imported the finest springs from England, personally selected wood materials, mixed his own finishing oils, and used only the most durable textiles. This commitment to quality can be seen in the design of this coffee table. Through the use of travertine for the tabletop, the designer ensured a durable, long-lasting surface, perfect for a piece of furniture as essential as a coffee table. Arden Riddle’s design style evolved throughout his career, but it never strayed too far from his roots as a craftsman and never wavered in his design aesthetic, even when it went out of style with the masses. Thus, this coffee table showcases the mid-century modern ethos that made the style reach the peaks of international popularity: functionality over unnecessary ornamentation. Not only can the lower level of the table serve as a shelf for storing day-to-day items, but the table can rotate, allowing for convenient use in the everyday home. Although the piece serves a clear functional end, the designer did not overlook aesthetics. The wood and stone come together beautifully, combining the deep, rich brown of the wood with the raw look of the stone, which showcases natural imperfections.

Arden Riddle dedicated his life to crafting furniture that he hoped would be appreciated for its classic beauty, comfort, and functionality, working on average a full year on a piece of furniture from concept to completion. He is recognised for the timeless and fine craftsmanship of his pieces both in the United States and abroad, as proved by this charming, versatile coffee table.
