This rare armchair model was designed by Arne Norell in the 1960s and was handmade in Sweden in the factory that Norell established in the same decade. These chairs are modern classics celebrated for their elegance that demands attention.

Like Norell’s “Sirocco” and “Inca” models, these “Jupiter” chairs take advantage of the mature look leather as a material provides. The design of these remarkable chairs sit in a long tradition of club chairs, comfortable armchairs with a wide design profile. Originally, the style was called “fauteuil confortable” or the “comfortable armchair” for the immensely comfortable sitting experience chairs like these provide. Norell’s version of the traditional style is injected with the Swedishness of the mid-century era that manifests in the gentle, curved edges, thick cushions and solid wood legs. Together, these features make these Jupiters exude warmth and cosiness without overpowering the elegance of club chairs. The cognac leather covers the frames tightly, accentuated by the deep button tufting in a diamond arrangement on the backs and seats. Overall, the balance between elegance and Swedish modernism is impeccable, with an even mixture of square and round shapes, and functional and decorative elements.

Norell valued function, comfort, durability and timeless design and worked exclusively with Swedish materials of the highest quality. Like all of his furniture, these armchairs were handmade in Norell’s own factory in Sweden. This pair characterizes Arne Norell’s unique idiom, which is still a guiding principle at the company.

About the designer:

Arne Norell started his own workshop in 1954 in the town of Solna, Sweden. Thereafter, he moved to Småland and established his company Möbel AB Arne Norell, today known as Norell Möbel AB (Norell Furniture). He was known for his versatile use of wood, leather, fabric, and metal in furniture characterized by comfort and ease. Norell’s success made him a household name within the interior design-world of Europe. Several models were also produced in other parts of the world under a licence.

He was to a great extent inspired by Danish design. Two examples of this influence are the lounge chair Ari and the safari chair Sirocco. Ari was awarded the British Furniture Manufacturer’s greatest award “showpiece of the year” in 1973. Many of the models he designed came into production after his death in 1971. His designs are still handcrafted by the same company today, Norell Möbel AB.
