In the realm of mid-century furniture, there exist turned furniture with a historical charm that exudes timeless elegance and craftsmanship, harkening back to the design sensibilities of the previous eras. Crafted from exquisite stained oak, these armchairs are beautiful examples with a striking resemblance to the works of Charles Dudouyt, a celebrated French designer known for his distinctive style.

Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in late 16th and early 17th century England, New England and Holland. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. The defining feature of these armchairs is their diamond-point box structure, which gracefully supports both the armrests and the adjustable backrests. The structural design is characterized by the clean ornamentation in the form of hand carved bars and intricate carved panels. The turned wooden bars on the sides and on the backs interlace throughout the framework and provide a sense of balance and symmetry, making these chairs not just functional pieces of furniture but works of art in their own right. The carved patterns, reminiscent of Dudouyt's signature style, display a delicate fusion of organic and geometric forms. The fluidity of the carvings creates a harmonious contrast with the chair's angular structure, resulting in a design feast that calls for the appreciation of the artisan woodworking.

While these chairs maintain their vintage charm, they have been thoughtfully refurbished to align with contemporary sensibilities. The newly upholstered cushions in a light bouclé fabric provide a stylish and inviting seating experience. This transformation not only enhances comfort but also seamlessly blends the mid-century design with modern aesthetics, making them a versatile addition to any living space.
