An artisan is someone that works with their hands to create unique, functional and/or decorative items using traditional techniques. Artisans are masters of their craft and create exceptional pieces of the highest quality. An artisan piece is characterized by these features, exemplified by this table.
Artisan style shuns mass-produced decor in favour of handmade pieces that are one-of-a-kind. This is most evident in the hand carvings on this table’s legs and on its top. Four rings of waves are carved into each leg’s top with a decorative blue colour stain that enhances the curves. The splayed, tapered legs create a classic mid-century modern look and besides providing structural stability, they are also perfect to show off the unique pattern. The rectangular tabletop has gently rounded edges and the same wave pattern framing it with a blueish colour. The wood was treated with lime, a technique in woodworking that is meant to bring out the best qualities of the raw material. Unlike traditional paint that leaves a topical plastic finish on top of wood, lime wash absorbs into the wood leaving a natural contour. The top showcases the wood’s versatile patterns and grain, adding natural decoration to the design.
To fill a home with artisan pieces is to fill it with stories. This side table carries in it the European mid-century design history that defined not only its era’s aesthetic, but still influences contemporary furniture design as well. However, it is the artisan craftsmanship that provides the core of this table’s soul and uniqueness.
