Sunburst Solid Oak Coffee Table, Europe ca 1950s (sold)

Upon hearing the words “Mid-Century Modern”, many people conjure up images of sleek furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. In reality, the style in Europe was not simply an exercise in nostalgia, rather, it is this coffee table: uncluttered, timeless, cosy, with impeccable quality of material and craftsmanship.

In most European mid-century design, there was an early emphasis on wood as it connected everyday objects, such as furniture to nature. This spectacular solid oak coffee table is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. The round sunburst tabletop is the evident main feature of this design. A sunburst is a design or figure commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns; it consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central point in the manner of sunbeams. Thanks in great part to an emphasis on wood, this table has avoided associations with cold industrialization and machine aesthetics of the era. European, especially Scandinavian designers’ predilection for curvilinear shapes and certain woods, often oak, is evident in this coffee table’s sinuous circular top and solid wood body. The four-sided square legs provide a nice contrast to the round shape of the top that they gently clasp.

This coffee table follows the fundamental design principles both aesthetically and technically. The simple design serves the purpose of showing the understated beauty of the wood and the endless possibilities under the hands of an expert craftsman. Furthermore, oak is an especially durable hardwood that is extremely multi-faceted with a beautiful grain and texture as seen on the wide sunburst tabletop.
