Danish Cabinetmaker Corner Sofa with Stained Wood Legs, Denmark ca 1930s (sold)
Danish Cabinetmaker Corner Sofa with Stained Wood Legs, Denmark ca 1930s (sold)
This beautiful Danish three-seater sofa recalls the Art Deco style of the 1930s with the recognizable touch of Danish Modernism. In combination with the unadorned style of Danish design, this sofa brings together the best of both styles.
There are a multitude of reasons why a corner sofa is a great idea in the living room. It may sound counterintuitive, but most corner sofas actually preserve floor space. While L-shaped sofas - such as this model - may appear bulky and overbearing at first, they are actually an incredibly efficient use of space; they provide the sitting space two separate sofas would offer but take up less space as they utilize the gaps in space normal sofas leave. This three-seater sofa showcases not only the functional perks, but also the visual appeals of corner sofas: the flowing lines, interesting angles, and the large, upholstered surfaces. Apart from the visual appearance, the exquisite craftsmanship of this sofa echoes Art Deco as well. Many of the well-known Danish architects felt the urge to try their hands at “Nordic Art Deco”, even though the style’s focus on luxury and decorative elements is in its nature in opposition to the ideas behind Danish design and constitutes a creative contradiction to the period’s streamlined modernism. The stylish, understated body is also very successful at highlighting the peculiar, stained wood legs. The differing back and front legs are organic and modern at the same time. The two, wide front legs are very distinctive and add a lot of character to the sofa.
Besides the functional and visual advantages, corner sofas also naturally encourage more socializing. Furthermore, this corner sofa is bound to be a focal point of any space regardless of its size. In Danish design, things are made to last rather than to be replaced, while the home enhances an unburdened lifestyle. Living well is in itself a form of art, and furniture design is meant to complement it. This sofa is ideal to serve these purposes in an elegant, comfortable, and stylish manner.
