Scandinavian Pair of Armchairs with Sculptural Arms, Scandinavia ca 1940s (sold)

$0.00

The period halfway through the 1900s was perhaps the most fertile breeding ground for innovation since the industrial revolution. Scandinavian design in particular encompasses the functional craftsmanship, the use of natural materials and the outstanding aesthetic dimension of the mid-century Golden Age.

The furniture models of this era and the personalities behind them have become the retroactive benchmark used to critique contemporary Scandinavian design. These armchairs have an essentially Scandinavian look with elegant, organic lines that create a striking silhouette. The warm coloured wood and the organic, sinuous curves of these chairs recall the bending of the human body. The welcoming, rounded shape of the arm- and backrest is a signature characteristic of Scandinavian Modernism. Besides the large back- and seat rests, the arms flowing into the front legs are the main visual elements. The sculptural form flows effortlessly and highlights the expert woodworking. The back legs are tapered and splayed for support. With just the stylish button tufting as decoration, the focus is on the wooden structure.

The outstanding visual characteristic of this pair of armchairs is both traditional and modern, simply timeless. This is precisely the charm of Scandinavian mid-century pieces, the effortless style paired with the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship.
