European Cabinetmaker Black Leather and Wood Lounge Chair, Europe ca 1950s (sold)

European Cabinetmaker Black Leather and Wood Lounge Chair, Europe ca 1950s (sold)

$0.00

‎This distinctive lounge chair shows just how versatile mid-century design was. European furniture making traditions and therefore design left much room for individuality, which is clear in the diverse shapes and forms of this chair.

The upholstered seat and back cushion immediately stand out as the cushions overarch the armrests and top of the back, and cover them in a unique way. The arm cushions are secured to the outside of the arms and so is the back cushion to the backrest's vertical slats. As a result, the upholstered parts appear very tight and precise dominating the look. With an elaborate upper part, the lower part of this chair is more restrained with carved scalloped edges and legs in a simple, round shape with mushroom-shaped decorative tops. While there are several, individual design elements, it stays balanced without being cluttered. The conscious use of the dualism of the straight and more elaborate lines and materials is very apparent and shows the designer’s brilliance. Furthermore, the bent back and thick cushions provide great comfort. The traditional craft of cabinetmaking played a very important role in European Mid-Century Modern design. The expert woodworking provides both aesthetic and structural quality, while the black leather highlights it by embracing the wooden structure.

The European mid-century is more than just about design. Today, pieces like this exceptional lounge chair belong in the realm of design art as they truly are heirloom pieces. Vintage pieces that were produced during the 1950s to 1960s - a period of furniture-making that was unprecedented - are museum-quality rarities today.
