This chair was created in the 1930s in France and the unique characteristics of Art Deco, which was an era defining movement in furniture design. French furniture makers embraced this style, and in the years between the World Wars, produced some of the most exciting and innovative Art Deco furniture the world had seen.

The structure of this chair is composed of wood with a beautiful veneer that has versatile patterns all across the body. The veneer on the unique form is greatly enhanced by the curves, especially the half circle shaped back and arms. The concave design enables the structure to stand on the elongated back and the sole, sculpted rear leg. This detail further adds to the charm of this model. At its inception, Art Deco was orientated towards the luxury market and paid little notice to costs and retail prices. Pieces were one of a kind; French furniture designers considered themselves the modern iteration of classic furniture makers. Furthermore, their artistic approach was anchored by characteristic French refinement expressed by graceful forms and traditional methods like veneering and marquetry as seen in this chair. The seat follows the lines of the two armrests, and seen from above, it is even more appealing.

The main charm of this chair however, is the seat cushion upholstered in yak hide. The cascading fabric creates an interesting, luxurious look with an edge. French furniture designers’ contemporary touch was based on the unmistakable functionality of the pieces created. They then applied artistic touches - such as the sculpted edges and the upholstery - some not traditionally French, that complemented the pieces’ functionality.
