Mid-Century Hand-Carved Oak Dining Table, Scandinavia 1960s (sold)
Mid-Century Hand-Carved Oak Dining Table, Scandinavia 1960s (sold)
This characteristic oak dining table is a nod to modernist design with traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship. The design relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork.
The northern pieces that appeal to most are the models that were designed with both nature and function in mind, for the sheer fact that they seem completely contemporary and undated. This oak dining table, is on par with the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, and Göran Malmvall, and is exceptional on its own merit. This piece was created with considerable technical expertise and holds a natural expression with its airy and organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material and the creative use of the tenon and mortise joinery. The hand carved rectangular tabletop showcases the solid oak’s pattern and every single move the creator made, reinforcing the rustic and elemental feel. The trestle base is perhaps the best style to showcase the beautiful joinery. The cabinetmaker’s expertise can be easily traced in the carvings and in the legs’ joinery techniques.
Scandinavian modern – despite its name – in many ways transcends the word ‘modern’, and so does this dining table. Like the style, this piece can be incorporated successfully into contemporary and traditional interiors alike, lending itself to a timeless and universal appeal.
