Italian Modernist Solid Wood Side Table, Italy ca 1960s (sold)

$0.00

Halfway between design and art, this refined and modern side table features a distinctively minimalist style and perfect proportions.

While modernism was a time of mass production in the many parts of the world, its Italian contemporary stood for something different. Though the advent of new materials like plastic and fibreglass revolutionized the production process, Italian designers still valued craft over industrialization and prized traditional materials. This sentiment is clearly visible in the design of this table, manifesting the perfectly sculpted body from the most organic material there is: wood. The pairing of the modern aesthetic with such an essential material creates an aesthetic dynamic that is not only stylish, but also timeless. Catering to a diverse range of purposes the design of this side table provides an easy solution to store or display a variety of objects. The sculptural body displays a variety of shapes, most notably the arch over the tabletop and the geometric construction of the legs. The tabletop is made of a different type of wood, accentuating the exotic pattern and colour of it. Against the black painted frame it creates a visual focal point that is engineered with great precision. The craftsmanship is simply stunning considering that the curving arch and lower structure are all crafted from solid wood.

This side table is without a doubt an innovative and dynamic work, taking a rigorous approach to the integration of architecture, design and hand craftsmanship.
