Upholstered Art Deco Stool, Europe ca 1930s (sold)
Upholstered Art Deco Stool, Europe ca 1930s (sold)
Art Deco was an era defining movement in furniture design. This Art Deco stool was created during an age of aesthetic creativity, and instantly recognizable design. As this stool shows, European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by characteristic Art Deco refinement expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods.
Though elements of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern are markedly different, both styles value beauty, shape, and colour. This is evident in the round, upholstered seat that defines the overall look. The rich yellow velvet fabric is secured to the frame with a decorative track of nails with floral caps. To keep the visual balance, the solid wooden body has a simple square shape with slender legs. The raw beauty of the wood is preserved beautifully, contrasting to the luxurious impression of the upholstered seat. This great sense of aesthetic balance shows the artistic quality of the Art Deco era. As the upholstery only covers the upper part of the seat, the wood’s colour variation and grain is showcased on all sides. The naturally occurring textural differences on the wood’s surface only add to the beauty of this stool and assure that there is no other identical one in existence.
During the 1930s, next to Art Deco style architecture, furniture pieces perfectly encapsulated the style's unique aesthetic. This beautiful accent stool carries this elegant style in it while also serving its functional role perfectly.
