Art Deco Cantilever Lounge Chair, Europe ca 1930s (sold)

Art Deco interior design, particularly in relation to furniture design, reveals a unique era of craftsmanship and style that remains influential to the present day. European furniture makers embraced this style and in the years between the World Wars, produced some of the most exciting and innovative Art Deco furniture the world had seen.

Pushing materials to their limits, the minimal silhouette of the cantilevered chair has fascinated designers and consumers alike for the past 100 years. Unlike most chairs, this cantilevered lounge chair is not supported by the typical four legs, instead supported by an oval-shaped structure that attaches at only one side of the seat. Constructed masterfully, this cantilevered model gives the impression of almost defying gravity, as if the seat was supported by an invisible column of air. While the tubular steel models of Marcel Breuer are the most well-known cantilever seating designs, there were some designers however who rebelled against the use of rational and cold tubular steel. Like Alvar Aalto, the designer of this model turned the focus onto the capabilities of a softer and more natural material, wood. The pronounced curve of the arms, embracing the body from the back are beautifully sculpted from solid wood with extreme precision and knowledge of woodworking. The wide arms showcase the pattern and grain of the wood and connect to the base seamlessly. The upholstered seat and back have a reclined position and “fill” the frame perfectly. The frame features gears in the back that shows that the chair could be further reclined. Simple and elegant, this chair has a slim, angled profile that recalls the playful curves of the Art Deco design movement.

This Art Deco chair was created during a modern age of material innovation, aesthetic creativity, and instantly recognizable design. As this luxurious lounge chair shows, European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by characteristic Art Deco refinement expressed through graceful forms and traditional materials.
