European Modern Upholstered Armchairs with Tapered Wood Feet, Europe 1940s (sold)

European Modern Upholstered Armchairs with Tapered Wood Feet, Europe 1940s (sold)
While the first half of the 1940s was still influenced by the designs of the previous decades, the second half set the stage for the mid-century modern design of the 1950s that’s been still increasing in popularity. This pair has the best visual qualities of both decades, with traditional materials and a modern, architectural look.
This elegant pair of armchairs is an interesting bridge between the 20th century’s earlier artistic movements, like Art Deco, and the modernist movement that was about to shape much of Europe’s furniture design for the coming decades. The chairs are gracefully resting on four tapered, solid wooden feet. The strong lines and proportions of the chairs are perfectly balanced with the short feet. Like the legs, the bodies of these chairs are more squared, opposing to the predominantly curved lines of later designs. This angular style is reminiscent of the Art Deco style movement and highlights the shape of the wooden structures. The stylish colour and velour fabric of the upholstery further contributes to bring the outline of the chairs into the focus. The armrests point slightly upwards, while the backs are softly tilted, creating a modern and welcoming look. The arms are connected to the backs seamlessly, fulfilling the fundamental design principles of exceptional sitting comfort and that the models must look good from every single angle. Quality craftsmanship was evidently of optimum importance for the cabinetmaker who created these chairs. The seat cushions provide as much comfort for the sitters as the design brings comfort to the eyes.
The subtle decorative qualities stemming from the early 20th century art movements and the simple lines deriving from the inter-war art movements give these armchairs their elegance. From every single angle, they offer stunning lines and rich texture, sure to serve as great accent pieces in any interior.
