Art Deco was an era defining movement in furniture design. These Art Deco influenced chairs were created during an age of aesthetic creativity, and instantly recognizable design. As these armchairs show, European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by characteristic Art Deco refinement expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods.

While Art Deco practitioners around Europe were often paying homage to modernist influences such as Cubism, De Stijl, and Futurism, the references were indirect; they were taking the end results of a few decades of distilling compositions to the most basic forms and inventing a new style that was visually pleasing. Though elements of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern are markedly different, both styles value beauty, shape, and colour. In these armchairs, this is evident in the pronounced curve of the wooden arms that define the overall look. Since the arms are hollow, the beautiful upholstery is visible from the sides as well, further complementing the gentle curvature. To keep the visual balance, the backs and the lower structures feature straighter lines but retain the rounded edges. The wood’s beautiful grain and colour variation stands out thanks to the upholstery’s textured fabric and elegant colour. The tightly upholstered seats and backs - while adding plenty of comfort and cosiness to the design - don’t take the attention away from the wooden structures, which shows the design skill of the maker. The pedestal-like legs connect directly to the arms and hold the bodies in an almost gravity defying way. This feature shows the high level craftsmanship of the Art Deco era. These chairs were created by Finnish furniture manufacturer, Oy Ekwall AB, renowned for their carpentry.

Art Deco is a modern art style that attempts to infuse functional objects, such as this pair, with artistic touches. This movement is different from the fine arts as the art object has practical purpose or use beyond providing an interesting look. With this ideal in mind, these armchairs provide not only visual pleasure, but also great sitting comfort and functionality.
