European Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chairs with Tapered Legs, Europe ca 1950 (sold)
European Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chairs with Tapered Legs, Europe ca 1950 (sold)
These cosy lounge chairs show the homely curviness that defined the design of the 1950s around Europe. This pair of mid-century chairs revolves around high-quality materials, comfort, and the mastery of European cabinetmakers.
This pair has a soft, sculptural shape paired with an ergonomic construction, which are very representative of the era’s design beliefs. Mid-century European designers and cabinetmakers were very firm about two things regarding seating designs: the sitting comfort and that the model must look good from every single angle. These lounge chairs fulfill these principles with their shell bodies upholstered in luxurious wool and their interesting, heavily angled legs. The shell seat is an inherently cosy style, that is elevated here by the upholstery. The light colour and rich texture of the wool complements the wood legs beautifully, highlighting their sculptural lines. The elongated, tapered back legs are especially captivating as they support the whole seats. The front legs have a similarly splayed look with a wide stretcher just under the seats. These chairs, like the best models of the era, assign a double purpose to the smallest functional element, making sure that every detail serves an aesthetic role as well.
As with most lounge chairs, this pair is also built in a permanently reclined position, that provides ultimate comfort. Thanks to their open profile and luxurious, organic style, they are ideal to draw attention while complementing any space.
