In France the 1920s are referred to as the Années folles ("crazy years"), a term originally coined to describe the rich social, artistic, and cultural collaborations of the period. In art, surrealism took stage and French culture was greatly influenced by America’s roaring 20s. This stool is in many ways, an antithesis to what is generally associated with the decade, with a more traditional, rustic look that is often times described with the Japanese expression, wabi sabi.

This cobbler’s stool from the early 20th century reflects the wabi sabi world-view visually with an emphasis on imperfections and of course, functionality. The seat and legs are carved out of a solid piece of oak with visible joinery techniques that only add to this stool’s charm. The three splayed legs are connected by stretchers that strengthen the stool’s stability, while their joining technique offers visual interest.

The appreciation of rustic simplicity and craftsmanship has never completely gone out of style, but in recent years, it saw an increase.
