Inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement, Dutch designers adopted a commitment to handcraft and the idea that artistic talent should benefit society. Following the international Art Nouveau movement, they practised integration of all the arts and drew motifs from nature, rather than eclectic historical precedents. This rare pair is a beautiful representation of the movement’s heritage in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Arts & Crafts movement borrowed from the indigenous patterns and techniques of the Dutch East Indies colony, as well as the sober Old Dutch furniture from the early seventeenth-century Golden Age. Throughout, an emphasis on geometry emerged as a striking feature of Dutch design that this set also preserves. The refined solid wooden frames’ most outstanding element is the ‘T’ shaped backrest wrapped in woven rush. The rush weave goes through the hollow tops and the fork shaped lower parts thus drawing attention to the unique shape, while also showcasing the pattern of the skilled rush weaving. The seats feature similarly shaped rush panels framed by the wood, establishing the organic impression. The lower part of the chairs have plenty to offer as well, with wooden side panels and stretchers placed higher than usual, with the back ones directly connecting to the backs. The legs are defined with tapered shape resulting in a sculptural look softened by the organic, woven rush panels. In contrast to the curving lines and sculptural character of Belgian and French Art Nouveau, Dutch Nieuwe Kunst had a more austere, geometric character that is evident here as well.

While not much is known about Dutch architect and designer, W. Kuyper, his known chair designs share the same high level craftsmanship and sculptural design aesthetic. Like most of his designs, this pair of chairs were most likely made by Bureau Kuyper in Amsterdam.
