Italian Mid-Century Opal Glass and Brass Wall Lamps, Italy 1950s (sold)

$0.00

While the mid-20th century was a time of mass production in many countries, Italian contemporary stood for something different at the time. Italian designers were integral in developing a modern aesthetic in Europe, imbuing it with the famed Italian elegance.

These wall lamps have a classic look defined by delicate elegance. Dominated by the opal glass shades in the shape of tulips, and the pronounced curves of the brass arms, this pair stands out despite its understated look. It manages to do so thanks to the impeccable quality of the materials and craftsmanship, as well as the perfect proportions. The large opal glass shades are balanced by the brass shade holders and backplates with gently rounded edges. When lit, these lamps create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid glow. Like most light fixtures of the era, the design assumes a more minimalist look that does not contain prisms and illuminates the space with direct light from the lightbulbs. Like their international counterparts, Italian designers prized the marriage of form and function, with a poise that is hard to imitate or force. It is this effortless element that sets Italian design apart. The shape and material of the shades sets the overall aesthetic of these lamps, introducing modernism to a classic style of one-armed wall lamps.

The design is very successful in mixing the traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of Italian modernism. Though the advent of new materials revolutionized the production process, Italian designers still valued craft over industrialization, which is evident in this pair.
