Scandinavia is extremely important in mid-century modern design history. In contrast with the functionalism of the International, designers from the region brought a refreshing breath of humanism and innovation to modern design. 

Distinctive in numerous ways, this table lamp showcases the versatility that characterized the mid-century era. Surpassing the strict functionality many European designers were concerned with, this model is a whimsical representation of the innovative experimentations in lighting design during the mid-century era. The unique look is the result of two components of the design: the sculpted metal shade and the tripod base. The shape resembles a figure leaning forward, which is reinforced by the base and the sizeable conical shade. The latter is folded so that the bottom remains open, showing off the bulb and the white painted inside that is especially appealing when the lamp is turned on. Through the brass ball joint, the head can be adjusted allowing the light to be directed freely. With its slender and elongated shape and black lacquered body, this lamp is a great modernist piece that stands out in any space. The neck has an “impossible” angle that is supported by the U-shaped legs to create the tripod look. To balance the light look, the brass and metal socket is more robust. The brass accents on the feet and socket bring the colour scheme into mid-century modernism, while leaving the main visual role to the black painted and lacquered structure. This lamp has many qualities that make it an ideal accent lamp, serving both a functional and a purely aesthetic role.

The period halfway through the 1900s was perhaps the most fertile breeding ground for innovation since the industrial revolution. Many Scandinavian lightning designers and companies of the era created innovative technologies that led to distinctive modern pieces, such as this table lamp.

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass has a beautiful patina.
