Like this pair of sculptural armchairs, European cabinetmakers’ seating creations are generally characterized by clarity in design and extremely high quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
Designers in the post-war period focused on simple, well-made pieces of home-grown woods such as walnut and pine. The solid wood frames of this pair are outstanding, both in visual and technical terms. The sculptural spindles are arranged symmetrically on both sides, grasping the seats in an interesting way. They also give the chairs an airy, light look despite being made of solid wood. The armrests have a beautiful curvature and follow the curves of the spindles. As a result, the chairs have a dynamic look that still remains elegant. The backs follow the light curve of the rest of the bodies, however, the lower part of the design is much more understated with mostly straight, functional lines. The ingenious feature is the large, thick and loose cushion on each chair. These seat cushions not only raise the level of cosiness and comfort, but also highlight the spindle sides. The sleek, light wood contrasts beautifully to the fabric.
The front legs are tapered while the ones in the back are slightly bent and splayed for support. It is somewhat rare for a fully upholstered body to serve a support role, but here, the wooden frames dominate the design with innovative solutions that are truly attention grabbing.
