French Lounge Chair with Footstool, France 1950s (sold)

$0.00

While the first half of the 1940s was still heavily influenced by the designs of the previous decades, the second half set the stage for the mid-century modern design of the 1950s that’s been still increasing in popularity. This set has the best visual qualities of both decades, with traditional materials and a modern, architectural look.

Visually, the pieces of this set, especially the lounge chair, recall the models created by Pierre Jeanneret for the Chandigarh collection. Much like the kangaroo chair, this lounge chair has an essentially simple structure that assumes some knowledge of architecture on the designer’s part. The outlines get wider and thinner, bringing the chair into a dynamic balance. Additionally, it has many interesting details, such as the beautiful rounded corners and curved beams. The legs and armrests flow into each other, while the stretcher on the front supporting the seat creates a floating look. The straight lines of the wood are masterfully broken by the seat’s curving lines, enhanced by the leather fabric. The seat and backrest have an ergonomic design to guarantee comfort for the sitter, a detail that Art Nouveau of the previous years was less concerned with. While the pieces of the set are all upholstered, the beauty of the walnut structures still draw the eyes. Similarly, the stool has a matching look, perfectly complementing the chair to create an aesthetic unit.

With the major rise in popularity that mid-century modern experienced, it’s easy to see touches of 1950s French style in contemporary homes. The natural and unfading beauty of wood, and the simple, but stylish design is timeless of the era. With an outstanding balance of straight and curved lines, quality materials, such as calf skin, and French design elements, this set is sure to provide comfort and style in any interior.
