Swedish Cabinetmaker Bouclé Armchair, Sweden ca 1950s (sold)

Svensk design, “Swedish design”, is unquestionably a conventional and popular branding device, with many companies explicitly promoting their products as examples of god design, “good design”. But svensk design does not simply represent “good” design made in Sweden, it also projects a powerful, concrete rendering of a sort of essentialized “Swedishness” embedded in objects, such as this armchair.

In Sweden, “svensk design” in particular denotes a way of life, which can be traced in the openness, understated elegance, and high-quality craftsmanship of this chair. The main principles of Swedish Modernism centre around minimalism, simplicity and functionalism. Accordingly, this armchair is free of ornamentation, the emphasis is on the welcoming, round and soft shape paired with beautiful stained wood and cosy upholstery. The round armrests follow the curves of the backrest, and the thick cushion as well. The wooden front legs are conical, while the back legs are tapered and slightly bent to assure structural support to the body. The differing legs add visual interest to the design, breaking the otherwise perfectly symmetrical lines of the body.

The craftsmanship of this chair’s cabinetmaker was without a doubt of the highest quality, and the maker had a great sense of proportions. This beautiful, inviting armchair lives up to its Swedish heritage both in terms of design and quality, which is further elevated by the luxurious bouclé upholstery.
