This authentic Tony Paul wicker and walnut stool is very versatile, serving double duty as a movable chair or a small table. Made of natural fibre, this stool was evidently constructed with great care. The wickerwork is carefully executed in a circular pattern with tightly woven rattan. Thanks to the expert technique, the rattan top is sturdy and stands the test of time. The pairing of rattan and wood is interesting and gives this stool an organic and stylish look. The tripod legs are carved from walnut with a minimalistic look that recall Scandinavian modernism. While there are many kinds of Tony Paul wicker stools, those produced in the mid-century are the highest regarded in terms of design.

About the Designer:

American industrial designer Tony Paul was born in the Bronx, NY on February 28, 1918. Paul attended the Pratt Institute and remained in the New York area during his nearly 60-year career, with stints in Italy and Spain.

His designs were distributed by several companies including, Raymor, Westwood, Verplex, Woodlin-Hall, The Elton Company and eventually his own design firm Tony Paul and Associates (Tony was also part owner of The Elton Company and as with many Mid-Century studios, the Elton name was created by combining the partners1 last names, in this case Elliott and Tony). Tony Paul designed a wide variety of products during his career, including lighting and seating. One of his armchairs was eventually selected for MOMA's prestigious "Good Design" award.

During his career, he associated with many of the Mid-Century design movement's top industrial designers, including Arthur Umanoff, Russel Wright, Ben Seibel and Paul McCobb. Tony Paul is remembered as a world famous American industrial designer. Above all, he is known for his designs of furniture, various houseware and lighting. ~H.
