“Alien” Table Lamp by Luciano Cesaro for Tre Ci Luce, Italy 1970s (sold)
“Alien” Table Lamp by Luciano Cesaro for Tre Ci Luce, Italy 1970s (sold)
Luciano Cesaro is without a doubt best known for his futuristic, space age designs. Among his creations, this “Alien” lamp is perhaps the most well-known. The Italian designer was a source of infinite creativity and design edge, that led to the creation of unique pieces like this table lamp.
It is fairly easy to see what inspired this postmodern model’s name. The shape is unlike any other model of its contemporaries or predecessors. The shade resembling an alien ship is formed by two frosted glass bowls, held together by three sets of black metal clips. The pyramid tip is made out of transparent glass, and serves as the focal point of the design. The shade’s glass bowls rest in a conical, black metal base, creating a shape for the lamp that resembles the famous Seattle Tower, or an alien abduction scene as it is often depicted in visual media. At the base of the cone is the switch lever that adjusts the light. The switch has two brightness levels, therefore the light intensity can be customized. The halogen bulbs diffuse an atmospheric light, that emphasizes the alien-like form. This present model was created at Tre Ci Luce during the 1970s. The Italian company was established in the early seventies to produce lighting designs for domestic interiors with the accent on the quest for style as a blend between form and innovative technical functions, creating products with an immediate visual impact that are pleasant additions to any ambience. As Cesaro’s “Alien” shows, high-quality looks, state-of-the-art materials and a careful study of both lighting sources and energy efficiency ensured that the very essence of the light is controlled and exploited to the maximum.
Luciano Cesaro worked in the years in which the international recognition of Italian design began, which has since been considered one of the excellences of Made in Italy. He participated in national and international exhibitions. His work has become prized by collectors of modern design all over the world, thanks to his one-of-a-kind designs that stand out in every space.
