Brødrene Nørgaard Møbelfabrik Set of Four Dining Chairs, Denmark 1970s (sold)
Brødrene Nørgaard Møbelfabrik Set of Four Dining Chairs, Denmark 1970s (sold)
The very rare chair model this set is composed of was designed by Johannes Nørgaard for the eponymous company, Nørgaard Møbelfabrik during the 1970s. Defined by the wenge structure and upholstered seat and back, this model is a Danish classic visually.
The square frames of these chairs immediately stand out, and deservedly so; the unique shape carved out of solid wenge is the most defining visual characteristic. The square shape forms not only the legs and arms, but the backrests as well. The elongated backs and hollow structure make sure that these chairs are not boxy. Massive and airy at the same time, the frames are left without any ornamentation, letting the beautiful grain and pattern of the wood stand out. The edges are slightly smoothed, especially on the armrests, showing that functionality was still very much in the focus of the design. The comfort is guaranteed by the floating backrests’ and seats’ soft upholstery in a mustard-coloured suede that complements the wood’s colour and matches with its grain as well.
The constructionist appearance supposes some architectural knowledge on the designer’s side, which wouldn’t be surprising as many Danish designers studied architecture next to carpentry, which was often an inherited skill. The Rødding based company, Brødrene Nørgaard Møbelfabrik, was established by the Nørgaard family, where everyone in the lineage - including Kristian and Johannes - has been carpenters as far back as one can remember, and they have left their mark on Danish design and craftsmanship.
