‎This set of six dining chairs are attributed to the Danish designer and master cabinetmaker, Jacob Kjær. He was a true “snedkermester”, a title given to the most excellent furniture makers. The chairs hail from the old Amtsgaard (county court) of Aarhus, Denmark.

Characterized by simplicity, Kjær’s designs drew on the finest materials which, unusually for his day, he crafted himself. Inspired by classical English Style, his clean, graceful designs are modern in interpretation. He did much to enhance the reputation of the Danish furniture industry as president of the Cabinetmakers Guild from 1952 to 1957 and of the Arts and Crafts Committee for Exports from 1944 to 1957. These chairs crafted from solid exotic wood evoke the quintessential essence of early Danish mid-century modern design, seamlessly blending functionality and aesthetics. Crafted in the 1940s, these chairs represent a pivotal moment in the evolution of Danish furniture design. There are clear semblances of classical elements such as the shape and stretchers. However, the overall impression is modern and sophisticated thanks to the upholstered seats and backs and the warm, solid wood frames. Jacob Kjær's astute craftsmanship is impeccably evident in the choice of materials and meticulous construction. The solid wood frames, boasting both durability and an intrinsic warmth, reflect the quintessential elegance of Danish mid-century style. A testament to the era's emphasis on simplicity and organic form, these chairs prioritize clean lines and unadorned surfaces, embodying the 'less is more' principle. The seats and backs are tastefully upholstered in a premium beige velour fabric, a choice that radiates both comfort and sophistication. This choice of upholstery material underscores the notion that Danish mid-century designers sought to cater to both the physical and visual comfort of their users.

Furthermore, the historical provenance of these chairs adds a layer of intrigue to their allure. Hailing from the old Amtsgaard (county court) of Aarhus, Denmark, they possess a tangible connection to the cultural and administrative life of mid-century Denmark. This set encapsulates an era of burgeoning Danish design prowess, and is a testament to Danish master cabinetmakers' mastery.
