Federico Munari Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chairs, Italy 1950s (sold)

$0.00

The Italian furniture and interior designer, Federico Munari is known as a master of elegantly organic forms. His seating models - including these chairs - were created to highlight the spirit of rebirth of post-war furniture design characterized by clean lines and a free spirit.

These individualistic lounge chairs reflect the mid-century Italian furniture style that was defined by unique design, perfect execution, and exclusivity. This delightfully eccentric pair is quite simplistic in its design, featuring a combination of round, shell-like bodies and slender, tapered legs. The rotund bodies embrace the sitter comfortably with their sloping armrests, which creates a cosy feel and look. Then there is the light indentation on the top of the backrests that immediately sets these chairs apart. This feature breaks the round but straight lines of the design and adds just enough edge. The cushions are nested into the chairs, therefore they follow the smooth and unitary aesthetic. The simple but effective shape is further supported by the light upholstery that is elegantly restrained while having enough textural variety to enhance the round forms. The chairs are mounted on tapered wood legs thanks to which they appear light and spacious despite their sizeable bodies. The stained dark colour stands out beautifully against the upholstery and emphasize the slim shape. The footstools have a simple shape covered in the same luxurious fabric, complementing the chairs’ unique look while also serving their functional role.

Though many mid-century Italian designers may not have the name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The appreciation for their contribution is still growing today making outstanding Italian pieces like these chairs highly sought after.
